Understanding persistent back pain

Most episodes of back pain improve with movement, rest and time. Pain that persists for weeks, changes how you sleep, or limits everyday activity deserves a closer look rather than a stronger tablet.

A clinical assessment considers your history, your movement and, where relevant, imaging. The purpose is to understand what is generating the pain so that treatment can be directed rather than general.

Where an interventional option is appropriate, it is discussed and explained clearly. Where it is not, rehabilitation, movement and supportive care can often achieve more.

This article is general information and is not a substitute for individual medical advice.
